Universal credit - how and when will it come into affect?

Housing Benefit when Universal Credit is introduced

If you claim UC and need help with rental costs, this will be included in the payment you receive and will replace Housing Benefit.  UC will contain similar allowances towards rent as part of the Housing Element of the Universal Payment which is normally paid directly to the claimant.

UC with support for housing costs will apply to most new claimants, and in some cases to existing claimants who have a change in their circumstances.  Exceptions to this are:

  • Those with more than 2 children
  • People living in temporary accommodation
  • People living in supported accommodation

If any of the above applies to you, please seek further advice about which benefit you should claim by contacting the DWP on telephone: 0800 328 5644.
