Selby Stories an exciting and innovative programme of arts and cultural events celebrating what makes Selby unique.
This unique programme runs until late 2023 and includes artist residencies, singing, songwriting, projection, performance, and music – in some familiar places but also unexpected, new, and different spaces.
Selby Stories is the cultural programme for the Selby High Street Heritage Action Zone (SHSHAZ). The SHSHAZ is part of a government-funded initiative led by Historic England. It aims to breathe new life into local high streets, from regenerating historic buildings to engaging local communities through art and cultural projects. Selby is one of more than 60 high streets in the country to receive a share of funding from Historic England, along with funding from Selby District Council.
The programme starts with an artist in residence based at Selby Abbey who is using tales from the past and present to inspire tiny artworks hidden in nooks and crannies around the historic building. You’ll be encouraged to see the Abbey in new ways both inside and out.
The Selby Stories team has also been busy gathering tales and recollections from residents of all ages exploring what makes Selby so important to you.
