Selby District Council is now consulting on its draft decision objecting to the removal of each payphone. The draft decision is set out in the “First Notification”.
The Council is inviting residents to take part in the consultation and let them know if their opposition to the removal of the payphones is supported by the local community.
The consultation closes at 5pm on 19 May 2020. Comments received will be considered by the Council prior to submitting a final decision to BT.
Reasons for removal by BT
BT says that overall use of payphones has declined by over 90% in the last decade and the need to provide payphones for use in emergency situations is diminishing all the time, with at least 98 per cent of the UK having either 3G or 4G coverage.
As long as there is network coverage, it's now possible to call the emergency services, even when there is no credit or no coverage from your own mobile provider. Phone boxes are not being removed where there is no network coverage, in accident black spots, and in a number of other locations which meet criteria.
