The Selby Bank Note was loaned for use in the Selby Treasures Exhibition, with thanks to Leeds Museum and Galleries.
Until the mid-nineteenth century many towns and cities had their own private banks which could issue bank notes for local circulation. Each note would be numbered, signed and dated by hand. This note was issued by John Foster who was a local banker, merchant, farmer, brewer and shipbuilder. Courtesy, Leeds Museums and Galleries.
