Residents in Selby will continue to benefit from adult weight management service 'Move It and Lose It' delivered by Inspiring healthy lifestyles on behalf of Selby District Council, thanks to funding provided by North Yorkshire County Council.

'Move It and Lose It', in partnership with Slimming World, is a FREE 12-week programme aimed at people with a BMI of more than 25.

Participants join an initial 12-week programme and are provided with weekly nutritional advice and physical activity, aiming to achieve 5% weight loss.  For those who achieve 5% or more, this is followed by a further 12-week maintenance programme.

From 1,800 participants already, 894 have achieved 3% weight loss in just 12 weeks, with 662 participants achieving 5% weight loss in six months, including Hemingbrough resident, Arlene Clure.

Arlene was referred onto the programme at the end of 2016 following a hip replacement due to osteoarthritis and has since seen sensational results.

She said: "To my horror I was 16st 11lbs and knew I need to act quickly.  I had a gym induction at Selby Leisure Centre and a programme was developed to suit my needs, that's when I discovered the Move It and Lose It classes which I started to take part in twice a week.  The difference the classes made to my recovery were incredible and I don't even have any visible signs of the hip replacement when I walk."

Arlene lost a total of 6-stone in just a 25-week period after signing up to her local Slimming World group. She added: "The combination of Slimming World and physical activity has given me my life back."

Lynsey Johnson, Head of Wellbeing at Inspiring healthy lifestyles said: "Move It and Lose It has proven extremely successful and popular with residents in Selby District.  The programme has so far given support and encouragement to more than 1,800 people in the area, so we're delighted to be providing the service for the next five years as we look to replicate the success we've had so far."

James Massam, specialist activity officer at Inspiring healthy lifestyles, who leads on the programme, added: "The scheme is fantastic and we've seen some incredible results in getting the community more active and healthy.  Together with our experts, participants get the chance to exercise with like-minded people at their local leisure centres in Selby and Tadcaster, with support from our partnership with Slimming World."

Cllr Richard Musgrave, Selby District Council’s Executive member and lead councillor with responsibility for housing, leisure, health and culture said, “It’s great to see that the Move It Lose It programme continues to help inspire more people across the district to lose weight and get more active. Our partnership working with Inspiring Healthy Lifestyles is about making the Selby District a great place to live, helping more people to lead healthier and happier lives.”

North Yorkshire County Councillor Caroline Dickinson, Executive Member for Public Health, said: “This is an important initiative, funded by our public health team, to encourage people to review their lifestyles and discover what they can do to improve their health and overall enjoyment of life. Typically, this includes looking at diet, smoking and exercise in one-to-one assessments and then developing an individual lifestyle change programme. The service is free for participants and is part of our work to improve the health and life expectancy of people in North Yorkshire.”

Participants can be referred through health professionals, or self-refer onto the scheme based on the criteria of having a BMI (Body Mass Index) of 25 or above.
