Selby staying strong and steady

Selby residents have been staying strong and steady through lockdown after face to face health and wellbeing sessions were forced to close in March.

Inspiring healthy lifestyles, who manage Selby Leisure Centre on behalf of Selby District Council, offer specialist programmes such as the Strong and Steady falls prevention programme.

During lockdown, participants havent been able to attend classes but that hasnt stopped them keeping up their exercises with.

Despite not attending the classes in person, participants are still keeping up with exercise and seeing improvements in their mobility.

Dani Penney, Wellbeing manager at Inspiring healthy lifestyles based at Selby Leisure centre, has been staying in touch with participants throughout lockdown with regular phone calls.

Dani told us: One participant who is 83 years old, and in the past suffered from 2 fractured ribs, has told me that she has reduced her walking aid from 2 to 1 and is rightly feeling very pleased with herself about it.

The purpose of the calls isnt to focus on physical activity levels as we would usually do, but on general wellbeing. For some, this is the only phone call they receive that week”

Through these calls, Dani has been able to direct people to services on offer from Selby District Council and essential services.

Cllr Mark Crane, Leader of Selby District Council, added: “We are all operating differently due to Covid-19 restrictions. However, I’m delighted to see that this important service is still reaching the people it needs to help in our communities.

“Continuing to operate this falls prevention service is an important way that we can help support the NHS. It is a great example of adapting the way we work but continuing to support where needed.”

Strong and Steady, a falls prevention programme run by Inspiring healthy lifestyles on behalf of North Yorkshire Sport across Selby District Council, supports people who are at high risk of falls by offering weekly sessions which feature a host of chair-based exercise.

Inspiring healthy lifestyles has been holding regular live exercise classes ranging from yoga to high-intensity training to dance and created a homehealthhub.org for people to access exercise, recipes, games and many more resources to keep people active, creative and connected.
