Our district is backing a nationwide scheme to reduce the use of single use plastic bottles.
Selby District Council is working with Refill to tackle the issue of plastic pollution by encouraging businesses and local organisations to sign up to the scheme – which promotes where reusable water bottles can be filled up for free.
Nationwide, the popular scheme is building a vast network of places where anyone can refill their water bottle and businesses are backing the scheme by adding their details to the Refill app and displaying the Refill stickers.
Cllr Chris Pearson, Executive member and lead councillor with responsibility for housing, health and culture, explained, “Like many others we’ve been motivated to support this scheme after watching David Attenborough’s Blue Planet 2, which highlighted the issue of plastic waste in our oceans.
“While all the plastic collected as part of our kerbside collection scheme is recycled, we want to support this scheme to encourage the use of reusable water bottles. We're overwhelmed by the really positive response from Selby's cafe owners who have welcomed and offered their support for the scheme."
Businesses with a publicly accessible tap can simply download the Refill app and add their local business details. Refill will then send them a sticker to display in their window.
Gus Hoyt, programme manager Refill, commented, “It's fantastic to see such an interest to support Refill in Yorkshire. Refill is a simple initiative helping you tackle single-use plastics at source. We have an amazing resource all over our towns and cities which provide us all with free hygienic drinking water. Participating businesses are added to the free rewards based app and pop a sticker in the window welcoming anyone in to Refill for free, purchase or not. It's that simple - and every single Refill is one less plastic bottle."
These cafes have already pledged their support and are displaying the Refill stickers:
Little Coffee House, Costa Coffee, Summit Indoor Adventure, The Cafe @ Selby Train Station, Little Miss Muffins, Chatterbox Community Cafe, Micklegate Tea Rooms, Rioco and Hope Yard Cafe.
To sign up to the scheme local businesses should download the Refill app, register to join the scheme and contact email@example.com so the Council can tell people you’ve joined the scheme. We need volunteers to join our team and help sign up other Selby businesses (restaurants and pubs) to the scheme - please email us to find out more. You can keep up to date about the scheme and find out which local businesses have signed up for the scheme here.
