Selby District Council is proactive and dedicated to helping support businesses in the area. The Council’s investment has continued to provide businesses with the right opportunities to develop and grow.
One of the great advantages of doing business in the Selby District is having the right environment to stimulate growth, with affordable business space, a well-qualified local workforce and fantastic connections to the rest of the UK by road and rail, the area has established itself as a great place to do business right at the heart of Yorkshire.
Selby District Council, in collaboration with its partners, is coordinating the inaugural Selby District Business Week from Monday March 4 through until Friday 8. The overriding theme of the week’s events are focussed on “Skills – how to future proof business growth”. The week’s events are made up of a number of targeted workshops across the district aimed at providing free advice and guidance to all businesses coming from a range of sector experts and local businesses sharing their own growth experiences.
The anchor event for the week comes from Lambert Engineering in Tadcaster an industry leading engineering company that has embraced the potential of developing their workforce through apprenticeships, this will then lead into events on “Retaining and Developing Staff”, “Talent and Succession Planning”.
Thursday morning sees a business start-up success story delivered in a “sofa” style discussion and audience questions in “Start, Grow, Inspire” charting the trials, challenges and achievements typically faced by start-up businesses. Friday’s closing event “Accidental Managers and Empowering Leadership” tackles an owner/manger’s challenges as a business grows and expands with support and guidance on how to embrace the opportunity.
In addition there are a variety of vocational events focussed on Cyber Crime (Police Regional Crime Unit), Making Tax Digital, designed to guide business through the new HMRC legislation on all forms of tax reporting being rolled out form April 2019.
All events are free to attend and are open to anyone across the business spectrum; owners, employees, students and those just wishing to learn more about businesses opportunities across the District. At the end of each event attendees will have the chance to enter a draw to win one of three £200 training vouchers each day throughout the week to be redeemed via The Skills Network in conjunction with Selby District Council.
Selby District Council’s Executive member and lead councillor with responsibility for Communities and Economic Development, Cllr Chris Metcalfe, explained. “The Selby District Business Week is a great example of the Council engaging with all levels of businesses to support growth and enterprise within the District.
By focussing on the Skills agenda we recognise the importance of giving everyone an opportunity to reach and exceed their potential, this is particularly important when we consider how we equip future generations of school leavers and those already in employment with the skills and aspirations for their futures. Retaining talent within the district by recognising their value and giving them the skills and training is an essential part of our role.
We pride ourselves as a district being at the Heart of Yorkshire and how we support and value the people and businesses that create so much opportunity.
