Information for prospective tenants
You need to be working with our Housing Options team to be eligible for our Private Sector schemes.
We work with private sector landlords in Selby and the surrounding villages. We now have a full time Housing Options Development Officer who is the point of contact for both prospective tenants and landlords and who works to source suitable properties for tenants referred to the scheme by working with landlords.
Our aim is to prevent homelessness and provide a successful route into private sector accommodation for people who might not be able to access social housing.
Maintaining relationships with landlords and customers is a crucial part of the schemes success. Any tenant/landlord that is matched through the scheme will receive various elements of support from the full time Housing Options Development Officer.
The Bond Guarantee Scheme can help people at risk of homelessness access privately rented accommodation, by overcoming their inability to provide a landlord's bond or deposit. This also gives a landlord the reassurance that they have cover for any rent arrears and property damage creating a solid foundation for the tenancy.
Tailored tenant support plan
A support plan will be tailored for the individual circumstances for each tenant and landlords, but will include at least three visits and property checks during the first three months. There can also be landlord inspections. This will start with transitional support making sure the tenant is managing well prior to the move and any other organisational referrals are in place. Support plans may include but won’t be limited to; direct debit and standing order arrangements for rent and bill payments, budgeting advice, living well, making smart choices and decisions over expenditure, and Housing Benefit or Universal Credit support which can be used by the tenant and the landlord alike.
These are classroom based workshops to deliver pre tenancy training for people approaching the housing service where it has been identified individuals would benefit from additional training and support to sustain their tenancies in social or private housing.
