Food complaints

We make sure that all food produced, processed or sold in the district is fit to eat, and that the food or premises that it is produced in pose no risk to your health. We carry out inspections on food premises in the district, including pubs, hotels, restaurants, canteens, shops and fast food outlets.

Please contact us if you have a complaint about food served to you in Selby District.

If we find food premises or practices that are below standard, we will tell the owner of the business to improve the situation by taking steps to ensure that the national standards are met. If necessary, we will serve a notice on the owner. If food is found to be unfit, we will make sure that it is not used for human consumption. We also ensure that food handlers are adequately trained.

Officers are always willing to offer advice to new or established businesses. We are keen to work with owners and managers of the business to ensure that food is produced and sold safely. Bad news travels fast and a food poisoning incident or prosecution can have serious consequences for your business. If you have concerns or need help, please make use of the food safety information available on this page or contact Environmental Health and Housing.

Many people suffer from food poisoning without it being diagnosed and food borne disease costs the country millions of pounds each year.
