DBS Checks

In order to use this service, you must have been contacted by Selby District Council for the purposes of recruitment or Taxi Driver licensing.

Selby District Council are not a registered body with the DBS and, therefore, cannot accept DBS applications from the general public.

If you need to apply for a DBS check and require use of an Umbrella Body, you can use this website to search for one. Please note this service is provided by Kent County Council.

What is a DBS Check?

The DBS checking process enables the Council to access information from the police and appropriate barred lists for the purposes of recruitment or licensing. A DBS disclosure can help determine the suitability of a person to work in a post that involves working with children or vulnerable adults.

Types of DBS Check

There are two types of DBS check - standard and enhanced.

A Standard DBS check contains details of current and spent convictions, cautions, reprimands and warnings held on the police national computer. Standard checks no longer include a check on the old or new barred lists. Therefore, if you are working or volunteering in regulated activity, an enhanced check is required.

Enhanced checks are required for anyone working with children or vulnerable groups. In general, work of this type will involve regularly caring for, training, supervising or being in sole charge of vulnerable groups. Enhanced checks contain the same information as standard checks, plus a check on the barred lists (if requested) and locally held police force information considered relevant to the job by chief police officers.

How to Apply

To apply for a DBS check, you must be:

  • Applying to Selby District Council for the purposes of Taxi Driver Licences (which will require an enhanced DBS check); OR
  • Currently working or intending to work (either in a paid or volunteer role) for Selby District Council; AND
  • Currently working or intending to work in regulated activity.

To apply, please click on the button below, which will take you to Kent County Council DBS website. If you have not previously registered for this service, you will need to do so before being able to apply for a DBS check.

Once you have submitted your completed application form and verified proof of your identity with the person who asked you to complete a DBS application, the application will be processed at National DBS. On average, this takes eight days. National DBS will then send a certificate to you in the post.

All processing of DBS application and certificates is in accordance with ISO27001, the DBS code of practice, regulations and Data Protection Act. You can view the full statement of fair processing by clicking here.
