arrowTenants Participation
We are committed to listening to the views of tenants and encouraging tenant involvement. Do you have strong views on how rent payers money is spent? Do your priorities differ from those of the council? Do you want to influence the way your homes are managed?

We are committed to involving tenants in the housing service we provide. We aim to involve our tenants in the decisions we make about the housing service through a variety of ways.

In 2006 Selby District Council undertook a review of all its opportunities for tenants to get involved with the Housing Service. As a result a new Tenant Participation Strategy called 'Get Involved!' was developed.

'Get Involved!' outlines what we are doing well, but more importantly what we can improve to make sure that Tenant Participation is actually contiruting to the continuous improvement of the Housing Service.

Why get involved?

Tenant Empowerment is at the heart of the Government's drive to ensure that decent homes are available to all those renting from social housing landlords. Selby District Council believes that involving tenants in decisions about the housing service will ensure that tenants get the service they want; in the way they want it.

Getting involved in the housing service means tenants can have a real say about issues that affect their day-to-day lives, and contribute to the overall quality of life throughout the Selby District.

As a tenant, getting involved can bring the following benefits:

  • Help ensure tenant's views are taken into consideration.
  • Have a role in important decisions on housing issues and your views are taken into account and influence final decisions.
  • Understand how your involvement can lead to improved services.
  • Council's decisions on housing issues are more open and accountable to you.
  • Benefit from training, to help you take part effectively.

What is a Tenant Group?

A tenants' group is an organisation formed by local people in an area of council housing. It is run by volunteers and must be open to everyone who lives in the area it covers.

The group may concentrate only on local housing issues, or it could get involved in wider housing policies that affect everyone in the Selby District. It could work just on housing, or it could be involved in a whole range of community issues. To get involved in the housing service, and to qualify for funding, a group must be officially 'recognised' by the council.

There are currently five groups working throughout the Selby District:

If you are interested in starting your own group or joining an existing group please contact the Housing Department on 01757 292270 or email housingservices@selby.gov.uk

The District Wide Tenant Participation Compact 2007

The District Wide Tenant Participation Compact outlines the standards we will work to when we provide our services.

The Compact outlines how you can be involved in the decisions we make about the housing service. It is based on the understanding that people want to be involved at different levels at different times.
