Selby District Council licenses all hackney carriages (taxis) and private hire vehicles. Drivers and private hire operators are also licensed. This ensures that you are carried to your destination by a driver and vehicle that has been vetted and formally accepted by a licensing authority.

Taxi and private hire - what's the difference?

Broadly speaking, taxis have their fares set by the Council and they can pick you up in the street or from a rank without a booking. They can also accept pre-booked fares. In Selby District, taxis will have:

• a blue plate on the rear
• an illuminated sign on the cab roof, and
• a meter in the vehicle

In contrast, private hire vehicles can only accept pre-booked fares and may not ply for hire in the street. The vehicle has a rectangular red plate on the front and the rear and fares are set by the operator or the owner.

Hackney carriage (taxi) fares as from 14 April 2011

Tariff One Daytime 7am-11pm Monday to Saturday

• £3.00 for the first 0.75 mile
• £1.50 for every mile thereafter (10p for every other 1/15th mile (117 yards)
• waiting time £15.00 per hour (10p every 24 seconds)
  

Tariff Two Night time 11pm - 7am (All day Sunday & Bank Holidays)

• £3.70 for the first 0.75 mile
• £1.70 for every mile thereafter (10p for every other 1/17th mile (103 1/2 yards)
• waiting time £20.00 per hour (10p every 18 seconds)
  

Tariffs Three and Four Christmas and New Year

Double the appropriate tariff from:

• 6pm, 24 December to 7am 27 December each year, and
• 6pm, 31 December to 7am 2 January each year

Tariff Five (to be used only when carrying 5 or more passengers in a vehicle licensed to do so)

Day and night time including Sundays and Bank Holidays.

• £3.50 for the first half mile
• £2.20 for every mile thereafter (10p every 1/22 mile (80 yards))
• waiting time £20.00 per hour (10p every 18 seconds)
