This is the Renaissance project. Designs for the project, which includes upgrades to the Abbey precinct and waterfront areas of Selby, as well as improvements to the centre of Sherburn in Elmet, have been on-going for the last three years.
£5 million of funding for the project comes from regional development agency, Yorkshire Forward, and the scheme is facilitated by Selby District Council. North Yorkshire County Council Highways department has also been closely involved in bringing the designs to life and they are extending the work of the Renaissance programme at the Abbey precinct by making significant improvements to Gowthorpe.
The Abbey precinct work is one of the major elements of the overall scheme. The area is being made more pedestrian friendly, with the extension of the market place paving. Traffic calming is being put in place along Gowthorpe, but there will still be provision for drivers to access local shops for deliveries and pick-ups. There will also be extra parking bays at the top of James Street.
Renaissance DVD
The core purpose of this 'Selby - Our Future' video project is to engage the people of Selby in the Renaissance Scheme, and in the regeneration of Selby. The video was professionally done with the help of students from Selby High School. They recorded people's views and aspirations of and for their town.
