Street Litter and Street Cleansing
We are responsible for keeping adopted streets, public areas and other council owned land free from litter and rubbish. We are committed to continuous improvement across the district, working in partnership with our contractors Enterprise to keep the streets as clean as possible.
Mobile Street Cleansing Operatives work throughout the district emptying litter and dog bins, picking litter and clearing rubbish amongst other duties. There are also mechanical sweepers sweeping leaves, grit and other debris from the roads.
When is my road due to be swept?
The Council's streets are divided into zones, depending on the volume of usage the streets have each day. Some high volume areas such as Selby and Tadcaster Town Centre are swept on a daily basis, others will be less frequent.
We aim to sweep all adopted roads every 8 weeks if we feel that they do not reach a high standard of cleanliness. However, if the visual appearance of an area should deteriorate to an unacceptable level between cleans, it will be cleaned up within a certain time, as laid down in a Litter Code of Practice under the Environmental Protection Act 1990.
If you feel your road is not swept satisfactorily, or you have any other comments or questions please contact the Cleanstreets hotline.
Drug Waste
If you find any needles or other drug waste on any areas of public land please do not touch them. Contact the Cleanstreets hotline straight away and we will arrange for the waste to be cleared within 1 hour. This service is available 24 hours a day.
Private Land
We are not responsible for private land, unadopted roads or private footpaths. If a piece of private land is littered, the owner is responsible for clearing the area.
