What is a Sustainable Community Strategy?
In 2003 the Government set out plans to build and strengthen successful, thriving and inclusive communities in which people would want to live. To help achieve this each local authority in England and Wales was asked to develop a Sustainable Community Strategy and work with a wide range of public, voluntary and private organisations to form a Local Strategic Partnership (LSP). A key function of the LSP is to develop and implement a Sustainable Community Strategy (SCS).
What is a Local Strategic Partnership (LSP)?
A Local Strategic Partnership (LSP) is made up of senior representation from voluntary organisations, the District Council, the County Council, the Police, Health services, Education, the Environment Agency and the business community.
What was the result of the last Strategy?
Below are some of the achievements of the 2005/08 strategy including:
- increasing our joint working to improve the way we deliver services in the district;
- launching the programme to develop our three market towns of Selby, Sherburn-in-Elmet and Tadcaster, and their surrounding area;
- developing cycle routes in Sherburn-in-Elmet and Tadcaster, new walking schemes in Flaxley Road, and improving the signs on walks in rural areas such as the Trans Pennine Trial;
- doing a great deal of work with children and young people on environmental projects, leisure projects, health projects and projects to encourage young people to vote;
- reducing crime rates and increasing crime detection rates through increasing the number of police and the work of the Community Safety Partnership;
- reducing road accidents through countrywide road-safety schemes and awareness campaigns;
- improving access to primary health care; and
- providing extra support for people who care for other people, which is now part of ongoing support.
