General Adoption Information
All dogs which have been seized by the Dog Warden service as stray dogs and have not been claimed by their owners within the statutory seven day period are passed to the kennels for re-homing. Prospective owners are charged a nominal amount by the kennels to adopt the dogs whatever the breed, age or sex of the dog.
Whilst we make every effort to advise new owners about the dog, responsibility for the dog's temperament, health and condition passes to the owner when they sign the adoption form. However, the dog is adopted on a fourteen day trial basis and if the owner decides the dog is unsuitable during this time, they can return it to the kennels. Any owner who wants to return a dog to the kennels after this period will be charged an acceptance fee.
There are always several dogs of different ages and breeds available for adoption and the situation changes on a regular basis. The perfect dog for you could be waiting in the kennels now.

Owners have a legal responsibility to ensure that when their dog is in a public place it is wearing a collar with an identification disc on it. The owners name and address should be clearly marked on the disc. This law is part of the Control of Dogs Order 1992. Failure to comply with this law can carry a fine of up to £5,000.
The Council's dog warden has the authority to stop and check the identification of any dogs, whether they are accompanied or not, to ensure they have the correct identification in place. The Council also has the discretion to take action in court for failure to comply with the legislation, should this be appropriate.
Over the past twelve months, Selby District Council's dog warden service has picked up many stray dogs with no identification, all of which could have been returned to their owners quickly had clear identification been in place. Instead, they have been taken to kennels until they are claimed, or can be re-housed with a different family.
If you and your dog regularly visit a different address, such as a friend's or relative's house, it is recommended that an additional identification tag is supplied giving this address as well. If you are taking your dog on holiday, it is also advisable to have a mobile phone number on the identification disc."
If your dog goes missing, or if you find a dog you suspect is lost, you should report this immediately to Selby District Council's dog warden service on 01757 705101. Any dog found but not claimed with seven days will be offered for adoption and the owner will not have the right to claim it back. |
