Selby District Council has a duty to provide a Dog Warden to:
- Deal with the seizure of strays, and
- Enforce the rule that dogs wear a collar and tag
In practice the Dog Warden does much more than this. At Selby, our Dog Warden deals with:
- Seizing stray dogs in public places
- Complaints made by members of the public including dog fouling, aggressive dogs and dogs causing a general nuisance
- Enforcing the laws relating to the control of dogs
- Putting up of 'No Fouling' signs
- Help and advice to dog owners about the welfare and training of dogs
- Educational talks at schools or any other interested groups
- Promoting responsible dog ownership by encouraging owners to microchip and neuter their dogs
- Animal charities such as The Dogs Trust and the RSPCA to improve the welfare of dogs within the District
- Inspecting licensed animal boarding and dog breeding establishments and pet shops where animals are sold, and
- Re-homing stray dogs which have not been claimed by their owners
