Selby District Council has a duty to provide a Dog Warden to:

• Deal with the seizure of strays, and
• Enforce the rule that dogs wear a collar and tag
  

In practice the Dog Warden does much more than this. At Selby, our Dog Warden deals with:

• Seizing stray dogs in public places
• Complaints made by members of the public including dog fouling, aggressive dogs and dogs causing a general nuisance
• Enforcing the laws relating to the control of dogs
• Putting up of 'No Fouling' signs
• Help and advice to dog owners about the welfare and training of dogs
• Educational talks at schools or any other interested groups
• Promoting responsible dog ownership by encouraging owners to microchip and neuter their dogs
• Animal charities such as The Dogs Trust and the RSPCA to improve the welfare of dogs within the District
• Inspecting licensed animal boarding and dog breeding establishments and pet shops where animals are sold, and
• Re-homing stray dogs which have not been claimed by their owners
