Access Selby's Community Officers have been working with volunteers and community groups to tackle fly tipping in the district.

Following up reports by concerned residents Community Officers worked in partnership with Enterprise, Horton Housing and local people to tackle problems in both Carlton and Burn.

Early investigations revealed issues concerning waste collection at two traveller sites in these areas, managed by Horton Housing on behalf of North Yorkshire County Council.

Community officer for the Southern area Susan Turner explained, "We worked in partnership with Horton Housing to find out how we could tackle some of the issues pro-actively and identify some preventative steps we could take to resolve the issues.

"It was agreed that large recycling bins were what was needed and these were delivered to the sites earlier this month."

Together with Horton Housing leaflets explaining the new facilities were distributed to residents of the area and a litter pick was arranged to clear up the existing fly tipping in the area.

Nickie Lamb from Horton Housing added, "We were really pleased to see volunteers from the Traveller community join us and the other volunteers on the litter pick and appreciate their community spirit."

Chair of the Access Selby Board, Cllr Bill Inness, commented, "This pro-active, joined up working has made a real, visible difference to these communities.  We're not just fixing a problem, we're looking at the reasons why it's happening and then teaming up with those people who can solve these problems over the long-term.

"Our team of Community Officers represents a watchful team of officers out and about on the streets, talking to residents across the district, finding out the issues that matter the most - and responding to them."
