Play Partnership Backing for 'Give Us a Go'!

29 July 2008

The Selby District Play Partnership is supporting the national 'Give Us a Go' Play Day initiative to be held on Wednesday 6 August.

A series of events are being held across the Selby district to mark the day, including in Sherburn in Elmet, Selby, Brotherton and Byram, Barlby, Hemingbrough and Tadcaster.  The Give Us a Go theme for this year's Play Day aims to promote the benefits of children and young people learning to manage their own risks while playing and aims to counter the risk-averse culture that can sometimes limit play activities.

All of the events are based on the following principles:

  • All children need opportunities to take their own risks when playing; they need and want challenge, excitement and uncertainty;
  • Through play, children can learn how to manage challenge and risk for themselves in everyday situations;
  • Opportunities for children to take risks while playing are reducing, as increasingly health and safety considerations are impacting on children's play; and
  • Adults should provide for children and young people to have adventurous play opportunities.

Nationally, Play Day is facilitated by Play England, a group supported through the Big Lottery Fund.  Locally, the Selby District Play Partnership has coordinated and developed a number of events based on the national Give Us a Go themes.

Chair of the Selby District Play Partnership and Chair of Selby District Council's Social Board, Cllr. Gillian Ivey, said:

"The range of events being held in the Selby district to mark Play Day will give children a chance to have fun, but they've also been designed help young people learn about managing risks while they play.  It's understandable that we want to protect our young people as much as possible, but it's also important that children are given a chance to learn about risks - by doing so we'll give them the life skills they need for adulthood.

"Supporting national Play Day is just one of the priorities for the Selby District Play Partnership - we're also working to develop long-term projects to improve play facilities for children and young people across the district."
