| Remedial Work on A63 Selby Bypass Swing Bridge |
|
| 27 April 2004 |

|
| The A63 Selby bypass was partially opened in March and since then, the Highways Agency has been working with the contractor to resolve a design problem affecting an element on one of the four hydraulic jacks which lift the new swing bridge. The remaining three will now also be replaced.
Once all four bridge jacks have been replaced and tested, it is hoped that the remaining section of the bypass from the A1041 to the A63 North, will be opened to motorists by the end of June.
Alan Begg Highways Agency project manager said:
"Technical issues with the new swing bridge have meant that unfortunately we will not be able to open the full length of the bypass by the end of the month as anticipated.
"One of the hydraulic jacks was replaced because of a potential problem identified during the testing process. Once the fault was analysed it was decided to replace all of the jacks with the revised design.
"The new parts are now being manufactured and as soon as these have been installed and tested, the remaining length of the carriageway can be opened to road users.
"The swing bridge is an unusual and complex structure. It has undergone a rigorous testing process which has successfully identified this issue and although we are keen to get the remaining section of the carriageway opened as soon as possible, we need to make sure that any potential issues are identified and remedied before the bridge is opened."
