On your marks, Get Set, get active!

18 July 2012

Residents are urged to look out for some specially branded buses promoting a unique event which aims to showcase the local opportunities to get active.

Six buses will be out and about on roads in the district advertising the Eastern Area Community Engagement Forum's Get Set event. The special family and friends fun day gives residents the chance to find out about all the local sports and leisure clubs in the area.

So whether its football, cricket, touch rugby, boxing, bowls, water sports, long-distance walking, Nordic walking, netball, photography, martial arts or even cheerleading, anyone of any age can come down to Barlby High School on Sunday 16 September from 12pm until 4pm to try new activities, find out more and join in.
As well as sports and athletics clubs, local groups including Rainbows, Brownies, Guides, Beavers, Cubs and Scouts will also be recruiting. The event, facilitated by the CEF and supported by Drax Power Ltd, is completely free and refreshments will be available.

Other attractions include a mass Zumba event, a police dogs demonstration and a tug of war between the police and fire service. The Zumba event will raise funds for Breast Cancer Research.

Chair of the Eastern Area CEF, Cllr Bill Inness explained, "There are loads of clubs and groups from the district, all in one place, just waiting to tell you how to get involved.

"We arranged this event in direct response to the residents who came along to Forum meetings and voiced their concerns that there wasn't much going on in the area. Once we starting looking into it we realised that there was a whole host of clubs and organisations offering all sorts of different opportunities to get involved.

"This event is unique in that it will bring together those providing these opportunities with those who want to know what is going on. Its not just about children, there are loads of opportunities for teenagers, families and older people to get active and join in.

"This bus campaign is just the first step in raising awareness of both the event and also the fact that in this area there is a hive of activity going on around us, that sometimes we just aren't aware of."

Come along, join in and find out what you can get involved in!
