How Council Tax is used

Selby District Council only takes around 10% of your total Council Tax bill.  The rest goes to fund other public services.  It's our name at the top of the bill because we collect Council Tax on behalf of all these other organisations: North Yorkshire County Council, the Police, Fire & Rescue service and your local parish or town council.

The amount you pay for these authorities is the same wherever you live in the district.  And depending on where you live, there is also a charge for your parish or town council, although in some cases there is no charge levied.

Here are some examples of how it works.  These are based on the Council Tax rates for 2017/18.  They're based on rates for a Band D property, which is an average-sized home.
