Clinical and medical waste collections

We offer free collections of clinical/medical waste from domestic properties in the district.  We are unable to offer clinical/medical waste for businesses including residential and nursing homes.

What is the service for?

We offer a collection for items of medical waste such as hypodermic needles, dialysis waste, dressings and similar items.  Needles are collected from yellow sharps boxes and other waste from yellow medical waste sacks.

If you have non-hazardous medical waste such as incontinence pads, these can be put into your grey refuse bin.  If you are producing large amounts of this type of waste you may qualify for a larger wheeled bin.

How can I arrange a collection?

Call us on 01757 705101 or e-mail us at info@selby.gov.uk.  There is no charge for the service.

How often are the collections?

We collect clinical/medical waste every Monday.  You can either have a regular weekly collection or you can just contact us as and when you need a pick-up.

What happens to the material when it’s been collected?

All our clinical/medical waste is taken for incineration to SRCL, which is a specialist site in Leeds.

What do I do if I find a needle or drug waste on the street?

Please don’t touch the needle or drug waste and contact us as soon as possible on 01757 705101.  We will collect the waste within one hour; including out of normal working hours.
