Arts in our district

There's lots going on in our district.

Selby's inaugural Arts Festival took place in July and featured a diverse mix of music, comedy and more. The vibrant programme included folk acts, threatre performances, poetry and even a baby rave. The event was be a huge boost to the local economy and arts scheme. Plans are already being made for the 2018 event!

The annual Selby Food and Drink Festival, organised by Selby Town Council, is a hugely popular annual event that takes place in July every year. As well as fabulous producers, there's street food and bars so you can relax and enjoy your food and drink. 

Selby Town Hall is an award winning arts centre which hosts world class performances from across a range of art forms, including music, comedy and theatre. Major stars, past and present including Dara O'Briain, Jenny Eclair, Midge Ure, The Wombats and Wilko Johnson have played there. The Town Hall consistently presents an incredibly diverse programme of performances from bluegrass to comedy, boogie woogie to contemporary dance and world music to classic theatre over two seasons of events each year. 

The Riley Smith Hall in Tadcaster is a threatre, ballroom and concert venue in the centre of Tadcaster. It hosts a wide range of functions such as dances, music, threatre, pantomimes and events. Regular events include ballroom dancing, Ceroc modern jive classes and freestyle nights, Zuma, children's dance classes, children's theatre group, rock n roll dances, Cuban salsa lessons, karate classes, choir rehersals and baby ballet.

In Sherburn the Eversley Park Centre offers a range of facilities that make it the perfect venue. It regularly a wide range of functions including balls, vintage events, exercise classes, dance classes, theatre groups, art clubs and pilates.

This year also saw the first Sherburn Craft and Food Festival, which took place over three days in August and saw celebrity TV chef demonstrations, 150 craft and food stalls, vintage displays, a children's cookery schools and competitions.

The Venue in Selby is a popular 300 capacity live venue which also has local rehearsal rooms. It has a state of the art PA, lighting rig, DJ booth and a/v equipment which makes it perfect to host the best specialist club event and functions. As well as music, the Venue also hosts regular comedy nights, including Edinburgh Fringe preview shows. There are even live action Zombie theatre nights!

Towerfest takes place annually in our district and is the north of England's premier open air country music festival. Featuring four days of live country music, the event in Drax, draws in visitors from across the country.

Selby Abbey regularly hosts concerts events, theatre performances, a reading festival, sketch book group and craft fairs - with a packed calendar of events throughout the year. The building is a very popular tourist destination following the marriage there of famous Taiwanese pop star Jay Chou.

In addition to these venues our district is lucky enough to have a large number of creative businesses and individuals. Some individuals occupy studios which are open throughout the year, others are showcased in galleries.

Local arts group Magnetic Arts is a not for profit group run by experienced art development workers in Selby. They match people with their art projects to improve mental health. They also work with partner organisation to develop new creative projects.

We're also lucky to have a number of popular craft workshops. These include jewellery making at Silver & Stone and even willow sculptures and crafts from Dragon Willow.

Our district has many small community groups who meet regularly to create art. There are theathre groups, choirs, dance groups and creative organisations. If you're looking for a particular art-form in the district you may like to start with your local library.
